Hey there- thanks for the great resource here on the web. I wanted some advice and I’m hoping it wouldn’t be too much to get it here. I graduated in 2006 w/ a degree in media culture. I did some volunteer event/pr work in sports for a major organization out of pure love for the Olympics. It didn’t occur to me at the time that, although I LOVED my work, I would actually want to do this full-time as a career until very recently (I’ve been out of school for 3 years). My degree is in Media w/ a creative focus and I recently moved out of NYC into a very small town with no real opportunities to explore sports pr. I made contact with a girl who works at a pr firm here but they specialize in technology/government business to business comms. I tried thinking of ways I can at least volunteer w/ some sports organizations here in a pr capacity. Most firm internships, especially the ones I would love to work for, REQUIRE that you are in undergrad. So how do I even get my foot in the door? And is it still viable to start in pr under another focus and move into sports? My plan was to simultaneously do sports volunteer pr and paying financial/gov/etc pr. Somehow I feel like I’m not being focused by doing that but the jobs just aren’t here and this economy isn’t helping. –Thanks for the help!!
Laura- I apologize for the delayed response to your comment.
It certainly is possible to move from a PR agency or another PR position into sports PR. Some of the higher up PR execs for teams and leagues have come from outside because they’ve had great experiences with NBC or a big brand like that. Unfortunately for entry level positions, there are just so many people vying for those jobs I don’t think you would be able to get a sports PR job without recent internship experience.
Based on your situation, I would say volunteering would be your best bet. I met someone who is a sponsorship exec for the Chicago Blackhawks and she landed her job because she spent years volunteering at events for the team. While that’s not sports PR, it is an example of how volunteering can open doors through networking and just getting face time in front of the people who may make the personnel decision when a job opens up.
Hope that helps and good luck!
